• This past weekend Big Daddy and I went Christmas shopping and came across a “Sing-A-Ma-Jig.” A Sing-A-Ma-what, you ask? Upon first glance I thought these were cute, and possibly perfect for a four year old and a one year old to get in their stocking. While contemplating this purchase several other little kids came over and played with the Sing-a-ma-Jigs. It was so cute, and endearing to watch. All the kids made these toys harmonize with each other. The inner band geek in me was so excited that this was even possible! The older kids tried to make actual songs; and the little ones just giggled, thrilled to be making noise.

What I noticed was that the novelty of this toy wore off quickly. Kids only played for a few seconds then ran to the next new thing. But these fascinating little toys made so much noise and were so fun looking that there was a constant stream of children playing with them. The result was an unending noise that was more than a tad annoying. Not to mention that they are slightly creepy. More than one child that I witnessed put their little fingers into the Sing-A-Ma-Jig’s mouth, and then toy appeared to bite down on them. I’m sure it didn’t hurt the kids because there was no screaming afterward, but the visual will never leave me. If I were a child it would haunt my dreams.

All this being said, this toy is a one trick pony. Sure it has song mode, chatter mode, and harmonize mode, but for roughly $13 a piece, it is not worth it. Perhaps if they were bigger, sang more than one song over and over again. Or, maybe not.
