• Let’s facet it, our kids are bombarded with technology at every turn. It will never cease to amaze me that my two year old can operate my iPad just as well (if not better) as I can. I realize that I need to take advantage of the technology available to my kids to enrich their lives and education. So I’ve been on the hunt for good educational apps that are actually worth something. I’m fairly cheap so you can count on me to look for free or inexpensive apps. Here are some that my family absolutely love.

    Encyclopedia Britanica

This is a great free app. It does have a subscription option, but as of yet we have not needed it. It’s great for answering questions without having to go through the internet. My kids ask a ton of questions so this is very helpful for us, I never have to say, “Uh…” Instead I can say, “let’s go find out!”

    Super Why
This app gets a ton of play at our house. Both my preschool aged son, and my first grader enjoy it. Letter recognition, sounds, rhyming, and spelling all in one easy to use and fun interface.

    ABC Wildlife
This app is fantastic. Basically it names a couple animals for each letter of the alphabet and shows beautiful HD photographs of them. There are also little coloring games and the biggest hit for us, movies about each animal. Sometimes the videos are as simple as watching the animals move, and others have narration with facts about each animal.

    Teach Me Toddler
There is a whole series of these teach me apps. They are fun and interactive. Basically it reinforces age appropriate skills by asking questions. Your child earns coins and then has the option to “buy” things within the game.

Those are our latest favorites. They have saved me from many of waiting room meltdowns, and long car ride grumps.
